The Shorodo website

The work

The fifth generation of the Endōji Honmachi shopping street.

Built around the theme “the temperature in the hand”: chapters cool from the 320°C of charcoal down to the 36.5°C of a palm. Films of Shoro-to sugar candy, suri-mitsu and hand-grilled Kinshachi kintsuba, words from the owner couple, an illustrated map of Endōji, and pages for visitors in English and Chinese. A 149-year-old signboard, in today’s form.

“Not just a site that lines up our sweets, but a place where Shorodo’s gestures and the warmth of our craftsmen come through.”

Design notes

What we decided for this shop.

Color & Type
Night black with deep crimson and sand. The history since 1877 is set line by line in vertical Mincho.
Motion
A single thermometer sits at the edge of the screen. It starts at the charcoal’s 320°C and falls chapter by chapter until it reaches the 36.5°C of a human palm — “the temperature in the hand” turned into the reading itself. The hand-grilling of Kinshachi kintsuba is shown on film.
Delivery
Four languages, so that visitors walking the street from abroad can read the names and origins of the sweets.
